Trichocereus peruvianus (Echinopsis peruviana) – "Blue Torch"
Native to the Andean regions of Peru, Trichocereus peruvianus (Echinopsis peruviana) is a fast-growing, columnar cactus species revered for its medicinal and ornamental value. Found at altitudes ranging between 2,000 to 3,000 meters, this species thrives in arid, rocky soils with excellent drainage, mimicking its natural high-altitude desert environment.
Physical Description:
- Typically grows to a height of 3–6 meters with multiple upright stems.
- Characterized by its bluish-green coloration and waxy, glaucous surface, hence its nickname, “Blue Torch.”
- Features 6–9 ribs, with small, areole-spaced spines measuring up to 2.5 cm.
Cultivation Requirements:
- Light: Prefers full sun but adapts to partial shade in extremely hot climates.
- Watering: Requires minimal watering; allow soil to dry out completely between sessions.
- Soil: Best suited to sandy, well-draining soils enriched with minimal organic matter.
- Temperature: Hardy to approximately 10°C (50°F) but thrives in warmer climates
